Weekly Student Writing Sample

Here is a writing sample from one of our CCSWP participants. This week's sample is from Kelly C.

I darted through the thick crowds of conversing spirits. Although the spirit world was very spacious, for some reason, everyone seemed to flock in the same places: the park, the judgment hall, and of course, the gate.

Somehow, I managed to not crash into anyone during my sprint to the gate, but as I told my body to stop moving, it turned a deaf ear! I couldn't stop! I tried to stop, I assure you, but I felt like I was on ice. All I was able to do was slip and slide in fruitless attempts to regain control. I barreled right into Mikey, the gatekeeper. He groaned, sounding strangely like a sick walrus.

"Chance, I've told you this every week for five years: I can't let you go unless you have a destination. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍You know how easy it is for spirits to get lost when they're out of the spirit world!"‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

I winced. I had ticked off Mikey and trust me, you do not want to be on that guy's bad side. As the gatekeeper of the spirit world, ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍he could banish you from the heavens! ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍After that, the most you could hope for is that you could evade the Ghostbusters long enough for him to calm down and let you back in. I bit my lower lip.

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍"Th-This time is different!" I assured him. "I know where I need to go!"

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍His eyebrow rose like a rocket launching into space, but he let me talk.

"I'm going to..."‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
